“My generation is going to change Jamaica.”
The Youth of Jamaica
OUTDEH is a documentary film that portrays the Youth of Jamaica: a new generation in transition, determined to get out of old and set structures in society and culture – and contribute with their fresh mindset and strength to a new understanding of the island.
By diving into the reality of the three protagonists Shama, Romar, and Bakersteez, the film offers us a deep insight into their daily struggle of searching their individual way out: Shama the first professional surfer of the island. Bakersteez is just starting a worldwide career as one of the uprising rappers creating and adding to a new Jamaican sound. The rough surrounding of Romar, born and raised in the Ghetto of Tivoli Garden, touches deeply while we can share his dreams and thoughts about putting his first step out.
Out Deh makes us aware of a new movement on the island of Jamaica: and generates respect and compassion for young people who follow their visions with courage and commitment.
Three Jamaicans
Behind the Scenes
Director – Louis Josek, born in 1994 in Cologne Germany, is a young film director. After several years of working on multiple film productions as a DOP, Josek finally found his role as a director. Out Deh is his debut film, portraying the quest of the youth of Jamaica and a profound cultural change on the island. It is not only a documentary on the struggles and first steps of a new generation but also a first step for the director himself to leave his trace on the ground of artistic cinema.
Producer – Andreas Jaritz, born in 1981 in Austria, has produced and co-directed two internationally critically acclaimed and thirteen times awarded documentaries prior to Out Deh. The Old, the Young and the Sea and the recent Beyond docs are anthropologic approaches to telling people’s life stories using a blender of cinéma vérité, direct cinema, and the postmodern digital outdoor and action sports cinematography. Out Deh is the first collaboration between Josek and Jaritz.
DOP – Tristan Siefert, born in 1984 and currently living in Berlin. After studying the art of light as a gaffer for many years he proofed himself as a DOP on worldwide film productions. Tristan’s understanding of light, the way he uses it for storytelling and the flexibility to let coincidences happen are his signature to this film.
